(April 2004)
Chris Brown started with an excellent new song "Swallow Up Some Gloom", which I thought had Mr Brown in particularly fine voice, which was a feature of his whole set. His next, "Driven" is fast becoming a Waverley favourite, the pulsing beat of Chris' exemplary rhythm playing mimicking the beat of an engine in this anti-car song, lovely chords too. The heartfelt "Redemption" (also new to me) finished on an uplifting note, Chris noting that "The last thing that I expected has come true", some nice dynamics going on there too, something that Chris uses very effectively in his songs, in my opinion.(June 2004)
First up tonight was Chris Brown, trying out new tune 'Run Amuck' which seemed to be about the drudgery of a bad week. Liked the line 'Feeling small, inner enemies standing tall', droning chords driving the melody along. One thing I love about Chris' songs is the element of hope that seems ever present in them - lines like 'I am with you now and always' serving as a reminder that the downtime is only temporary. Which is cool! Next up was 'Redemption', descending bassline leading 'like a newborn' into a 'world bright and new'. Lovely stuff, tension building up through a murmured refrain 'my...soul...awakes' before the final chorus. This man's tunes always seem real pure to me, nice to hear in a world of angst-ridden musicians! Ending with 'The Morning Star', a bright and ringing song with more of that dark/ light imagery, Chris gave a great opening set this evening.
