Joe Hartney kicked straight into his song ' Not much to say' with some whistling and pulled us into the swirling melody and lyrics. Joe is a brilliant songwriter and with this song he definitely doesn't disappoint. The next song 'Sentimental' oozed into a more melancholic mood, a fabulous lyrical lullaby. For his 3rd Joe kicks up a gear again with his musings, our ears tingling with lyric packed melodies and he draws us all in. Such great song writing, beckoning us to - 'stand up for ourselves'.

(November 2003)
Joe got the crowd - certainly those beating drums and tambourines - on his side with his strong set. "Get You Back" was imbued with political comment, mainly of the personal kind, and a great deal of confidence. This 'should have won the MTV award for most words in a song' (© Joe). "Nothing Much To Say" slowed things down somewhat and the final number, the romantic "For You", dipped its toe into jazz-tinged territory, which was an interesting development in Joe's songwriting.
