(Dec 2004)
JULIE KING 's a capella prowess stopped us in our tracks. Her first song suddenly drifting in to silence the room and has us eating out of her hands with this beautifully ghostly tune. Julie's 2nd instantly jumps into a quickened pace, cutting the air like a knife – ‘I want my fucking life back' . Digging up an ancient song from her archives she continues on energetically and dives into a cracking melody. Julie's voice stands so strongly on it's own and all 3 songs have great and varying shade and story. Awesome stuff. Very powerful.
(Nov 2004)
I reviewed Julie before as one of the most distinctive performers to appear at OOTB recently, with her poignant, reflective style and at times quite raw lyrics, and tonight was no exception. A novel song about the fear of performing brought a curious performance quality to it, as indeed she showed some nerves whilst singing the song. Her final song, of wishes unfulfilled, “she'd give a lot for conversation but the TV's on instead”, was a stark portrayal of loneliness and perhaps a warning for people to take action in their lives.
