songBeing Someone Else |
(Sep 2003)
Julien started with a "crazy" song. Julien demonstrated a soaring vocal tone over the upbeat tempo which this song had. The vocal melody went well over the steady rhythm and kept everybody's toes tapping. He slowed the pace slightly for his second song but still kept a good steady rhythm. This song also featured more powerful vocals and melody. Towards the end, Julien sped up his playing and he climbed up the fret-board, then slowed down again as he climbed back down, singing such lines as "I don't want to die" to great effect.(May 2003)
Diverse set of the evening award undoubtedly went to Julien. Saxophonist Alex played (without microphone!) along to "Fight Against Me" and took it to a jazzy, avant-garde place I don't think it had been before. This was the first sax played at the Waverley and it was a most welcome musical introduction. This was way-out left-field stuff and unlike anything heard previously at the Waverley Bar. His next song (sans sax) was written in French and I've no idea what the title was. Julien sang this in a lower register than the one he sings his English songs in, which was a curious thing. "Being Someone Else" showed how much Julien has come on in leaps and bounds since he first came to the Waverley. Confident and comfortable on stage, 'please tell me where you want to go' was the refrain.
