(March 2003)
Stuart Clark hit the stage running after a few weeks' rest with a strong set of songs, gearing up for a stint on stage at Whistlebinkies. "Blow" should be familiar to many at the Waverley by now, a song about the damage cocaine can do sung with a burning melancholy ache. "Scared Shitless" was written a few months ago when it was obvious the USA wanted bomb practice on Iraq. Not many people are writing about the war but Stuart sings this protest song with honesty. The line 'this all scares the shit out of me' articulated the thoughts of many. A new one "Nine Sides" focussed on the state of the world in general at this time. This was a mellow, abstract piece which I can see growing on me in the coming weeks.(April 2003)
Now getting paid gigs all over Edinburgh, we were honoured to have the popular Stuart 'Djembe' Clark this evening. He also made a good guitar technician, tuning the battered house guitar, amongst others. He started proceedings with "9 Sides", a melancholy, gentle and assured number sung with a pleasing lilt. "Coca", the story of his coke-addicted friend, sounded just right on this one - the pitch, pace and timing were all spot-on. Jill H requested "Typical", about shitty one-night stands, and it rounded off yet another fine set from the man who is hot as the fires of hell right now.
