OOTB 580 – 11th October – Open Slots

Posted 09/10/2014 By admin

slot-car-trackHey ho. No featured act this week means we have more open slots up for grabs. Fifteen minutes of stage time each is available so that you can show us your creative wares. Sign up around 7:15pm-7:30pm and then OOTB flushes the musical toilet at 8pm for an evening of thoroughly cleansed performances.

Our sister open mic event, The Listening Room, has returned home to the Blue Blazer bar. After a brief absence (and a stint at a different venue) TLR is now on every Sunday 7pm-9pm in its original and most natural environment. Well worth a visit.

Look underneath the breakfast table to find the top of the morning,

GraemeMearnsWe have yet another incredible headline act booked for you all this coming Saturday evening. A long-standing fixture of the Edinburgh songwriting scene and a well-known figure on the Scottish band circuit, Graeme Mearns is an established solo acoustic player and songwriter as well as an electric performer with both his own Legendary Graeme Mearns Band and high-paced punksters Joe Viterbo. Covering a wide range of styles from mellow jazz through abrasive alternative to full blown punk rock his highly original material showcases his inimitable guitar style and blackly humorous – not to mention foul-mouthed – poetic sensibilities. Albums range from the sombre acoustic tones of ‘So Far Away’ and the lo-fi eclecticism of ‘Real Life Cinderella’ to the rockier ‘Some Kind of Bliss’ and the simply weird ‘Into the Hollows’. Imagine Django Reinhardt getting drunk with the Stooges and you’re somewhere close.

Here’s a link to Graeme’s website: graememearns.com

Regular performance slots are available as per usual. Sign up 7:15pm-7:30pm and OOTB will press the red button of danger at 8pm. Original material only and free entry as always.

Always put winter socks inside your feet to avoid imperial inches.

quantum-double-slitYo. Another week and another Saturday beckons for another round of open slots. The OOTB stage is open to any performer who has penned their own works and who would like to perform to an appreciative audience in the cosy back room of the Kilderkin bar. Musicians, poets, comedians and the like are all welcome.

Sign up time is 7:15pm-7:30pm, then OOTB kicks off at 8pm for an evening showcasing some of Edinburgh’s finest talent. Will be great to see you there.

Flick the switch to eject the glitch.

OOTB 😀

ao13aSpring onions and shallots are not good for fleshy open slots as they sting lots if smeared across freshly forming blood clots. OOTB have had a long enough festival break now, and it’s time to get things ‘n’ stuff rolling along. This Saturday there is no featured act, so more slots of stage time are up for grabs.

Sign up around 7:15pm-7:30pm and the curtain rises for a new season of showbizzy creative talent at 8pm. Original material only of course, so let’s hear how you’ve managed to think ideas from inside your head that form analogue packets of artistic information into the real physical world.

Our bowels are empty, but our stomachs are full…

OOTB Festival Break

Posted 30/07/2014 By admin

edinburgh-castle2OOTB is taking a break throughout August to make way for this year’s Edinburgh Festival.

There will be no OOTB events during this time.

We return on Saturday 13th September at 8pm.

See you then then…

OOTB.

OOTB 575 – 26th July – Mike Donaghy

Posted 23/07/2014 By admin

Mike DonaghyHello. This will be our last OOTB until after the festival. So we’re really pleased to feature Mike Donaghy – a fantastic Irish Singer-Songwriter who has visited us a few times in the past.

In his own words:
“Mike Donaghy has been making a name for himself in Ireland and the UK since releasing his first EP (January never came this year) back in 2009. His music and writing has a very inimitable sound, occasionally being linked to folk, Americana and bluegrass. Mike grew up to the sounds of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, John Prine, The Beatles and Van Morrison being played out from every sound system in the house. He was also fortunate to grow up in a musical family, and a home never short of instruments, and his father working as a TV producer and director, and more importantly, on music shows. He remembers vividly sitting round the fire at home joining in and learning songs with such legends as the Clancy Brothers, June Tabor, Ralph McTell, Keiran Goss, Sonny Curtis and long time friends the Sands Family”

So why not come down and bring your songs and enjoy our pre-festival bash?

Gaping wide open slots await your tightly wound G-strings. Sign up 7:15pm-7:30pm and OOTB will start rubbing your brass nuts to a high sheen at 8pm. Original material only and free entry as always.

Be there or be savagely minced into a shepherd’s pie horse-meat scare…

OOTB 573 – 12th July – Tau Boo

Posted 09/07/2014 By admin

TBLive1dHello. This week’s featured act wasn’t invited or asked to play at all, but had the brash audacity to desperately and embarrassingly plead for the headline accolade that is more deserving of other worthwhile artists. Tau Boo himself even declares that he can’t really sing, he’s more like someone who is mimicking those who can actually sing. Marry that with a guitar style that is all fingers and thumbs which is also recklessly masked by delay/reverberation effects, and of course he’s been careless enough to unwittingly catch at least three nasty colds this year already. A good source has informed him that brewing fresh ginger as tea everyday should help. So if you don’t want to witness a clumsy great pretender who smells of ginger then avoid at all costs. Here’s a link to his website which is a work in progress: tauboo.co.uk

Do you possess a better natural sounding scent to entice our ears and noses? Sign up time is 7:15pm-7:30pm and then OOTB starts brewing the talent tea at 8pm. Original material only and free entry as always.

Be there or be forever entwined in Tau Boo’s badly needing to be cut mess of hair…

OOTB 😀

screamin whisperHello. This week’s featured act is a talented Irish-born young man who calls himself Screamin’ Whisper. He moved to Edinburgh last year at the age of seventeen and quickly emerged as a bright new talent to hit the city’s live music scene. Screamin’ was also chosen to play with the Edinburgh Schools Rock Ensemble as his style has a confident rock and blues influence. He’s played on the OOTB stage several times and we are delighted to have Screamin’ as our headline this Saturday. Come along and witness a musician with a promising career and whose records you’ll be buying in the near future.

Here’s a link to some of his music: soundcloud.com/screamin-whisper

We need more talent, new and not quite so new, to fill our open slots. Sign up around 7:15pm-7:30pm and OOTB will press the start button of the performance machine at 8pm.

Original material only and free entry as always.

Our open mic page has just been updated for July as well. All these listed events are always looking for performers to grace their stages and are all worth checking out.

Be there or be dangling like a tennis ball in Andy Murray’s bottom hair…

OOTB 571 – 28th June – Sir Tom Watton

Posted 25/06/2014 By admin

Tom WattonHallo, hullo and hello. Along with all the usual open slots this Saturday we also have booked an amazing and popular featured act. Sir Tom Watton has played OOTB many times, and has also helped run the night in the past. His music is passionate, witty, funny and above all catchy!
Musically speaking he has broad ranging influences (including Danny Thompson, Fairport Convention et al.) though broadly speaking his sound can be described as “folky”. Or as he says himself, “a mixture of genres, but a good mix”.

Tom started performing his own material at the age of 14, in an improvisational comedy duet ‘The Lesbian and the Thespian’ with Sarah Bentham.

Since then Tom has written in a variety of styles, including comedy, but he mostly composes folk influenced acoustic songs. As a double bass player and bass player Tom has accompanied Ollie Banks, Harriet Frank, Alastair James, Phil Simpson and his dad; John ‘The Jazz Pistol’ Watton.

It was onstage at Beached 2006 in Scarborough that compere Graham Rhodes gave Tom his stage name (Sir Tom Watton) when Tom was playing double bass for acoustic guitar virtuoso Ollie Banks. The title was given as an accolade for his organisational work with both Beached and Acoustic Gathering.

An evening not to be missed. Here’s a link to Sir Tom’s website: sirtomwatton.co.uk

Just another reminder about this Thursday’s AGM which is an open invite, so the more the merrier…

On Thursday 26th June, at 8pm, Out Of The Bedroom will be having an Annual General Meeting at The Kilderkin to discuss events and the future of OOTB.
This is in light of our secretary, Nyk Stoddart, having to stand down from his role after years of outstanding service, during which time he’s actually been doing the work of what, more ideally, would have been done by two people.
If you’re interested in being a member of the committee, we’re looking for someone to schedule meetings and take notes, as well as someone to book acts and do publicity, but outside this, we’re always looking for volunteers willing to help out with compering, sound and the setting up of equipment.
This meeting is an open invite, so anyone who wishes to join in the discussions and may be interested in contributing to the running of OOTB in a greater or lesser capacity will be most welcome.
I look forward to seeing you there,
Steve Osborne (Chairman of Out Of The Bedroom).

Actually will be rather splendid to see you there,

OOTB 😀

OOTB 570 – 21st June – Gerrybhoy

Posted 17/06/2014 By admin

gerrybhoyHello. This week’s featured act Gerrybhoy has been playing on the Edinburgh open mic scene for several years now, and has impressed us all with his beautiful, melodic, catchy and witty story songs. We think he is one of the finest songwriters in Edinburgh, and are very pleased that he accepted our invite to play at OOTB. If you haven’t heard him before (or especially if you have) here is a golden opportunity to hear him.

In his own words:

“Singerysongwritery type individual, a natural born weegieburger and lover of black country dogs. Over the recent past my focus has been on writing and recording songs for participation in web based songwriting activities, such as:

50/90, write 50 song in a ninety day period, completed once

FAWM, February Album Writing Month, write 14 songs, completed twice, I think?

NASOALMO, National Solo Album Writing Month, write 40 plus minutes of solo work, completed once.

I have over 100 original songs posted on Soundcloud with the help of some wonderfully talented collaborators.

To date I have considered myself as a bit of a virtual singer songwriter given my entire collection work is done in a studio and the audience web based.

Think it’s time to try out the real world, I don’t know where it’s going but I will know when I get there.”

Here’s a link to some of Gerrybhoy’s music: soundcloud.com/gerrybhoy

Sign up time for all you performers out there is 7:15pm-7:30pm and shortly after OOTB starts at 8pm. Original material only and free entry as always.

Be there or be an angry rabbit stew and not a bouncing fluffy hare…

OOTB 😀
