About

Out of the Bedroom (OOTB) launched in 2001 and has consistently had three main objectives:

  • To promote the creation and performance of original music.
  • To provide a platform for musicians in the Edinburgh area to reach a wider audience.
  • To stimulate a vibrant and dynamic original music culture in the Edinburgh area.

OOTB hosts an open mic night every fortnight on Thursdays at The Safari Lounge, 21 Cadzow Place, Edinburgh EH7 5SN and entry is free. The night runs from 8pm to 11pm. Sign up for an open mic slot starts from 7.30pm and is on a first-come, first-served basis. OOTB does not allow pre-booking of slots or booking by proxy, i.e. someone other than the performer booking a slot.

Performers should only play original material, although there may be some rare cases where this rule is relaxed. Open slots last between 10-15 minutes (two to three songs), depending on the number of acts who want to perform. OOTB includes “squashee” slots where musicians are allocated a one-song slot during busy evenings. The OOTB host reserves the right to allocate slots as appropriate.

A house guitar is provided for performers and there is an in-house PA. OOTB provides a host and sound technician for the evening.

OOTB ask audiences not to chat during the performances; there is space to chat in the main bar. OOTB has at least one short break to allow for comfort break, chat, buying of drinks, etc.

On Thursdays in between the Safari Lounge events, there is an online event hosted on Zoom called Out of the BedZoom. Details of how to attend these events will be posted here and on the OOTB Facebook page.
